Hi, I’m Amie Johns, the Marketing Executive at The Lucy Rayner Foundation and I ran for Run Reigate in 2022. After having never ran before, the lead up to the event was daunting but the thrill of a new challenge and the importance of the cause quickly balanced that out.
At work, we are constantly sharing the importance of the link between physical and mental health and reminding those that follow us or connect with us via social media that introducing daily exercise is a great tool to better an individual’s mindset. I felt that after pushing this so much on social media, and working tirelessly to recruit enthusiastic runners, it was only right to participate myself and I am so glad I did!

A couple of months of training meant that I was ready and raring to go (despite the obvious last-minute nerves and expected anticipation). The day ran smoothly, beginning with an encouraging meet up at The Lucy Rayner Foundation tent before the race commenced. It was great to see so many other runners in their red t-shirts and really nice to have the opportunity to take pictures and network before the race started.
I set off on my 5k race and was quickly humbled by the steep hill that greeted me at the start. Luckily, the steep incline was followed by a refreshing decline so I was given the chance for my breath to return and my determination to stabilise. Whilst the course was much harder (and hill-ier) than expected, the support of friends, families and locals really helped to get me through, not to mention the occasional bowl of jelly babies which offered a welcome boost!
Overall, I would recommend Run Reigate to anyone, whether you are an avid runner, have never ran before, are keen to support a local charity or simply want to set yourself a challenge! Running is an excellent way to get fit, increase self confidence and drastically improve your mental health. If you are thinking about it, this is your sign to bite the bullet and give it a go!!
